“Thomas,” I answered my phone before checking the display a week later… Something I really needed to stop doing. It wouldn’t keep me from having to take calls and deal with bullshit, but it would at least prepare me for some of the problems.

Or at least have the migraine medicine ready.

“What is this I’m hearing about you attacking Murray at your club?” Director Ferguson demanded in my ear.

Loudly.

I bit back a sigh and slapped on my game face so I kept it together. “Sir, I have not touched—”

“Magically. He said it was magically.”

“Sir, Thomas isn’t a witch, nor—” Monroe interjected, letting me know others were on the line.

Nice that I got info like that before I was blasted.

“I know that. I want to hear this from her,” Ferguson snapped.

“I am not a witch, nor am I able to attack him magically, nor did I, sir,” I stated clearly.

“You used witches that—”

“Sir, before you repeat Murray’s mistaken assessment of what happened and accuse a woman of a crime that comes with a death sentence, might I suggest I simply send you the video and audio of exactly what happened, including my repeatedly demanding Murray leave my business?”

The line went so quiet so fast it was almost amusing.

“You have that?” Deputy Director Galvin asked.

I snorted. “I’m blonde, sir, not stupid. You know we have the club covered. You’ve been there when we’ve needed it. Yes, I have world-class cameras and audio that caught the whole thing. Others cannot bring in recording devices, but we cover our asses for everything. The Navy practically beat that into me, and then the FBI tattooed it on me with all the paperwork.”

I actually smiled when there was an echo of snorts. At least we could agree on that.

“And I would like to start by saying what I did to Murray and point to the fact that he was at my club days after taking over one of the biggest offices the FBI has,” I added. “Why wasn’t he buried under piles of files like any other chief would be? I dragged him there to attack him? He went looking for shit and found it when he couldn’t get his way.

“So, with all due respect, Director, I’m going to insist we include my attorney when we talk going forward or at least record our calls. Last time we spoke, I was a main suspect on a bombing case because it had ties to the Catholic Church and DCFS, and there are millions of people who despise both. Now I’m attacking Murray with magic, which is a capital crime against law enforcement.”

“I didn’t think of that,” he admitted after a moment. “He was off duty and signed a waiver that the club was for entertainment. I assumed something got out of hand when… It got out of hand. I wasn’t accusing you of a capital crime, Thomas.”

“Glad to hear it, sir,” I replied, having a hard time keeping my voice even.

Especially when the asshole continued. “But you’re going over the line asking for an attorney.
